We're children from all around the world and we all love books. We're joined by a project, where we discover the world of books and share stories with young readers from other countries. Books made us friends and our plan is to bring some books to life :)

HAPPY EASTER FROM MAINE, USA!

We used Google Translate, and we hope we are correctly wishing you all a Happy Easter in your language!

GREAT NEWS!!!

We have a reason to celebrate :)

Two of the countries-participants awarded us with the National Quality Label. What does this mean? It is a concrete recognition to teachers and schools of the high level of their eTwinning activities. For pupils, this offers a boost to their work efforts, and for the school in general, a public affirmation of their commitment to quality and openness in European collaborative work.

Awarded by Slovakia

Awarded by Poland

Because 2 of our participants got their National Label for Quality our project will be automatically awarded with the European Quality Label.

Congratulations!

And now we'll have to wait for other countries to bring a decision as well. Because the deadlines for applying are different in each European state, the final score will be known till the end of the year. We keep our fingers crossed ... :)

We drew dragons and added glitter. Here are our dragons:

We are sorry that our video with our puppets didn't come out properly. Here we will show you our favorite part of the book.

Story about Gevenducha

We read with children a story about Danka and Janka. The story is called Gevenducha. It is such a little brute, which is drawed by Danka and Janka and it revived. It looked awful and did bad things. Girls had peace only when they rub it out. Matúš from our class had an idea, that they would draw Gevenducha and write about her in English what they already know.

The Paper Bag Princess, from Maine, USA

We picked The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch. Mr. Munsch was born in the USA, but he now lives in Canada.
Princess Elizabeth wants to marry Prince Ronald, but first she has to rescue him from the Dragon. Princess Elizabeth is a brave, kind and smart princess. Prince Ronald is mean and rude. The Dragon is not too smart, but he's funny. There is a surprise ending to this story!

Drawings of THE SLIPPER CAT

This week we talked about The Slipper Cat. What do we know about her?

The Slipper Cat lives in the woods in a tidy white house with red roof and flowers on the window shelves. In her home everything is in order. The Slipper Cat mends slippers and makes them clean and beautiful again. During the night she takes slippers from all children who don't put their slippers in order before going to sleep. We asume she climbes through the window, maybe even parents let her in the house or she opens the door lock with her clutches. In the winter she makes new slippers for children. She is a kind cat.

We decided to make paintings of her. We joined more technics: crayons, ...

... coloured paper ...

... and water colours.

And here are our Slipper Cats :)

Making flags in Iceland

We worked in pairs of two making the flags. Each pair drew a countries name from a bowl and made the countries flag. Pupils used an atlas to find out how the flags look like and then got some paper and crayons to work with.

First graders in Iceland made these flags, one for each of the participating countries.

More pictures will be on the TwinSpace soon.

Atwood Primary School, Oakland, Maine, USA

Thank you for inviting us to join you in this project!

We put titles in our slideshow, but they didn't show up! So we'll tell you about the slides. The bird is the black-capped chickadee, which is the state bird of Maine. The cats are Maine Coon Cats - we are the only state in the USA to have a state cat. Maine Coons are very big, sweet cats with large furry feet and tufts on their ears. Moose live all over the woods in Maine. Lobstering is hard work, and we have pictures of lobster boats, lobster buoys, lobster traps, and a real Maine lobster. Fall is very beautiful here, as all the trees change colors. Maine is said to be "Where the forest meets the sea." We have great beaches, with VERY cold ocean water! Maine has lots of rocky coastline. Sugarloaf is a place we like to go to ski. Our Olympic skiiers and snowboarders train there. The last picture is of Northern Lights - a natural light show that sometimes happens in our sky in the winter.

We are in First Grade in a small primary school in Oakland, Maine, USA. Oakland is in rural Maine, and there are many lakes near us. Maine is the part of the USA called Northern New England. We usually get lots of snow, and all of us like to ski, snowshoe and snowmobile. Our summers are very short, but they are warm. Maine is famous for wild blueberries, lobster and maple syrup. Maine is a very large state, and it takes 7 hours to drive from the southern part of our state up to the northern part near Canada.

We will be choosing our book soon, and are excited to be a part of Books Make Friends!

Our book

The five from the nook - Krystyna Drzewiecka
It is a very funny book about the world seen through the eyes of ten-years-old boy. He tells about funny events at home and at a school, about adventures, imaginative plays, small and large problems, about his parents, teachers and colleagues from the class.
We painted the characters from the book.

THE SLIPPER CAT

Yesterday we read a book that we're gonna introduce you. Only two of us haven't heard the story yet. The title of the book is THE SLIPPER CAT.

After listening to the story we draw some characters in our notebooks, which helped us to remember the story. We always tell the story to our parents and we did this yesterday as well.

We found the story very educational. We liked The slipper cat and her house. We liked the village that children lived in, because it was so tidy. We liked the happy ending. We liked the promise of The slipper cat. Two boys from our group found the story boring, because they knew the book so well and because there was no fighting in it :S

We talked about our slippers and the slippers we'd like to have.

We're looking forward to working on this book. We made many plans :)

GETTING TO KNOW OUR FRIENDS

On Friday we watched the photos and slides our friends posted on our project blog. We learned about foreign children, foreign towns, foreign countries ...

We liked them a lot. And music too!!!

We used Google Earth to get a good look from the air as well. We just love exploring by this tool.

We observed the flags and put them on our blackboard. We wrote Slovenian names for all the countries.

It's becoming more and more interesting ...
P.s.: We'll add French flag as soon as possible. Welcome, new friends!

Visit the library

Today since the morning we have looked forward to visiting our county libraries. Its name is Vihorlatská Library – named by mountain Vihorlat located near the Humenné town.
We are pupils of the second class and we visit the library second year so we took a cards with us and we went.

We decided that we will choose a book for our project. In the library a librarian aunt welcomed us.

Then we looked in the library area- books were nice standed alphabetically. We were delighted by how many books are in this fairytale world. And each one book covered a treasure in itself, which we would like to get to it ..., We couldn´t borrow all the book finally.

For our project, we chose a book written by Mrs. Maria Durickova called Danka and Janka. We founded that they are twins. Tomorrow we are starting with reading.

Some of us borrowed more books. With Danka and Janka we will spend time at school and with another beautiful book at home.
